Dr. David Anderson

September 14, 1934 — May 24, 2025

Dr. Dave Anderson was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and raised on a farm in the Snake River Valley. He earned his B.S., DVM, M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Idaho, Washington State University, and the University of Wisconsin, where he also met and married the love of his life, Janice Gale Schmied. Dave is survived by his wife Gale and their two children, Kathryn Lynn Trettel (Michael) and Christopher Kyle Anderson (Deena) and four grandchildren, Win Hart, Ansley Hart, Haleigh Jane Anderson and Kinzer Trettel.

Dave served in the U.S. Army before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin. In 1969, he and Gale moved to Athens, Georgia, where Dave became Director of the Poultry Diagnostic Research Center. He later served as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs and was appointed Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1975, a role he held until his retirement in 1996.

A respected leader in veterinary medicine, Dave was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and a founding diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. He served as editor of the Journal of Avian Diseases from 1973 to 1994. He was named Georgia Veterinarian of the Year in 1980 and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Washington State University.

Dave is remembered for his sharp wit, dedication to science, and lasting contributions to veterinary medicine. Gifts made in his memory will support the Poultry Diagnostic Research Center, his pride and joy, and ensure his legacy continues through future discoveries in poultry health.
