Dr. Noel Fallows

The Noel Fallows Graduate Fellowship in Spanish will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Noel Fallows (1961-2021), a longtime faculty member in the Department of Romance Languages.

Dr. Noel Fallows was a dedicated educator whose passion for languages, literature, and culture inspired his students and colleagues. A world-class scholar of medieval Spanish literature, he published several field-defining books. His research earned him a series of notable research prizes and honors, culminating in his election as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and his selection as a Distinguished Research Professor here at the University of Georgia.

Throughout his career, Noel embodied the values of curiosity, integrity, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on our institution. A beloved instructor, he received the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship, the Richard B. Russell Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the J. Hatten Howard III Honors Teaching Award. He also served in key administrative positions: Head of the Department of Romance Languages, Associate Dean in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and Associate Provost of Global Engagement. As a scholar, teacher, and administrator, he contributed in transformative ways to the University of Georgia’s growing international profile and influence.
