UGA’s History Department is excited to announce a fundraising campaign to support the John C. Inscoe Professorship in Southern History. This new position honors John’s storied career at the University of Georgia, one that spanned nearly 35 years. Now retired, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having taught thousands of students, published dozens of articles, and edited and authored fifteen books on Southern history, with a special focus on the history of Appalachia. John’s service to the wider field is also legendary. He served for many years as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Historical Association; editor of the Georgia Historical Quarterly; and more recently, editor of the acclaimed New Georgia Encyclopedia.
We invite you to commemorate John’s life and legacy by helping endow this professorship, which will memorialize John’s many contributions and guarantee that his passion for Southern history will live on forever at the University of Georgia.
