UGA Holds 2024 Mary Frances Early Lecture

The University of Georgia hosted the 24th Annual Mary Frances Early Lecture Tuesday afternoon. This year marks the 62nd anniversary of Early’s graduation in 1962, as the first African American to earn a graduate degree from UGA.

Alton Standifer, Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence and Chief of Staff to the Provost, says these lectures are a time of experiencing living history.

“It’s a staple, a part of the culture of the University of Georgia, something we look forward to each year, in honoring Ms. Early” She makes it a priority to be here. Standifer said. “And it’s one thing for us to be able to share Black history, but here at UGA with Mary Frances and later this month with Charlayne and the Holmes family, we’ll get to experience Black history.”

Yvette K. Daniels delivered the 2024 lecture. She serves at the Director of University Relations for the Georgia Department of Public Health. Daniels was the 77th president of the UGA Alumni Association and the first Black female president.

The lecture is sponsored by the Graduate School, Graduate and Professional Scholars, the Mary Frances Early College of Education, and the Office of Institutional Diversity. It is a free, community-wide event.
