Dr. Samuel Watson Horner III left us to join his beloved wife Lynne on February 21, 2023. When our Lynne passed away, January 29, 2021 they had been married one month shy of 60 years. Dad was born in Ft Sill, OK on March 4, 1938 to Colonel and Mrs. SW Horner II. He spent his early years in Anniston, Alabama with his mother, grandmother and grandfather while his father was deployed. It was there that he developed his love for all things outdoors.

When it was time for Sam to attend prep school he went to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania where he honed his skills as a golfer, swimmer, runner and football player. While attending college at Virginia Military Institute, it became apparent in his freshman year that he had a passion and talent for football. He led his VMI team to conference championships and an undefeated season and graduated with a civil engineering degree. Sam was inducted into the sports Hall of Fame at both VMI and the Hill School in his lifetime.
Sam was drafted by the Washington Redskins into the NFL as the first pick in the second round. He was then traded to the New York Giants and he played for them until he retired to attend the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962.
Sam met Lynne, on a blind date arranged by his aunt and they were married within three months. Lynne always said she had never cared for football players but went on to date to appease her friend, Margot.
When Sam graduated veterinary school he started in equine practive, SW Horner and practiced for 40 years. The practice was renamed Horner & Nash, DVM when Jim Nash bought a percentage of the practice and it's still a thriving practice that continues to live up to Sam's high standards of care and integrity.
When Sam retired from veterinary practice he returned to his love of golf with great passion and made many wonderful friends along the way.
Sam is survived by his sister Margo Elizabeth Horner, his daughters Helen Horner Hamryka (West), Margaret Horner Eglin (Tom), his four grandchildren Sam Eglin (Luiza), Chris Eglin, William Hamryka (Rachel) and Richard Hamryka. He leaves behind many friends from VMI, the horse world and from golf (you know who you are!) In lieu of flowers please donate to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine in Sam's name.
